In the modern West, we think that politics started in Ancient Greece. The word politics comes from the Greek word “polis,” which means the people in a city. The Greek philosopher Aristotle wrote a book called “Politics” in the 4th Century BC. Western politicians call Aristotle the father of modern politics.
If this is true, politics is about 6,000 years old. In fact, as it refers to the organisation of any large group of people, politics could in fact be said to be much older than this. For as long as people have organised themselves into groups, there has been politics.
One of the most important factors in politics is the issue of tax. People pay tax to contribute to the smooth running of their city or state. Taxes can pay for clean water and sewerage systems, or armies and navies to provide defence against other states.
