A diet known as the ‘Banting Diet’ was one of the first diets popular with people, a man called William Banting lived on this diet of meat, dry wine, fruits and greens, having four meals a day. His idea of a healthy diet was to not consume sugar, avoid starch, beer, butter, milk and sweet foods. This diet was quite popular for some time. The booklet he created in 1863 was titled ‘Letter on Corpulence’ People would ask ‘Do you bant?’ and the diet and documentation was still available until 2007.
A very overweight gentleman by the name of George Cheyne who was a Doctor, one day decided to start consuming only milk and vegetables. He became healthier and advertised his diet, recommending those who were overweight to follow it. He composed a piece of writing in 1724 ‘An essay of Health and Long Life’ which includes the advice that one should exercise and get plenty of fresh air, also avoiding rich luxury foods.
